Exploring How Testosterone Can Change the EEG

Thursday February 8, 2024 | 3:00 - 4:00pm PST

This talk will be to discuss the effects of testosterone on the EEG when taken for gender related reasons. The talk will also go over the basics on the population and give more insight to help you with your clients that fit this population.

When one has a multi-channel electroencephalogram (EEG) assessment, the list of medication intake is needed to better determine what of their brain presentation is likely due to medication effect. In general, clinicians do not train medication response if the client continues to take it. The use of testosterone as a hormonal supplement to aid in gender transition from female to male is necessary. Thus, it is important for clinicians to be aware of how testosterone could present in a single- or multi-channel EEG assessment when preparing to do neurotherapy. This led to the comparison of a 19-channel assessment of this ‘assigned female-at-birth transgender’ (AFBT) population to two normative databases; NeuroGuide and iSyncBrain. Nineteen subjects met the criteria and were used in this study. Using the NeuroGuide database, which does not separate male and female data sets, there were no significant differences when comparing to the normative database. However, when exploring the raw EEG patterns, those notable patterns were again observed. Secondly, the iSyncBrain database, which is the only gendered database currently available, was used to look at participants, allowing a comparison of each of them to both the male and female data groups. This found that delta was lower in both groups and higher gamma was seen.
